Golf Programming

Youth Golf

In 2018, we partnered with the Mulligans Golf Association’s (MGA) Summer Youth Golf Program, in support of their efforts to provide basic introduction, along with intermediate and advanced knowledge and skill development for the game of golf.

The MGA has been providing this opportunity/experience since 2010, and has served over 300 inner-city youth in the greater Lima region. In 2021, MGA reached a major milestone, as Leiahnni Smith, longtime program participant, alumni and current member of the Bethune Cookman Women’s Golf Team, became only the second African-American to win an Ohio High School State Golf Championship, as a member of the Lima Central Catholic Girls Golf Team. In 2022, Leaihnni was named Lead Instructor for the Summer Youth Golf Program, bringing her experience full circle and giving her the opportunity to teach, serve and help develop the next generation of inner-city golfers (and leaders). Leiahnni is a current member of the Bethune-Cookman Women's Golf Team, majoring in Business Administration and preparing to serve (work) in the billion-dollar golf industry. In 2024, we reached our second milestone, as program participant Mya Crowder led the Lima Sr. Girls Golf team to their FIRST Conference Championship in school history.

Why golf? Golf is a unique outdoor sport like no other because no course anywhere in the world is the same. Each course has a different shape and diameter. The pin placement is also never in the same position, as it will always vary to make the game more challenging. Unlike many team sports, golf is personal. Most of the time, you play against yourself and the course, trying to beat your own previous record. Golf is also a game that can be played throughout one’s life, even into your senior years.

Golf is metaphoric to life, as it teaches you how to take responsibility for your decisions, improves your social skills, develops work ethic principles and teaches you to be patient. Golf also teaches and encourages core values such as confidence, courtesy, honesty, integrity, judgement, perseverance, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and bounce back.
